Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State has called on parents to play a more active role in their children’s upbringing by instilling values that foster personal integrity and societal progress.
The governor made this appeal during an Eid Kabir celebration hosted by the First Family of Lagos State at the State House, Marina, on Monday.
Sanwo-Olu, who made a brief appearance at the event before attending to other state duties, was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
Highlighting the critical role of parents in nation-building, the governor described the youth as the future of the country and urged families to nurture their children with discipline, honesty, and devotion to God.
“Our children are the future of tomorrow. It is our duty as parents to guide them rightly and nurture them with the values of honesty, discipline, and obedience to Almighty Allah,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu also urged Muslims to reflect on the core teachings of Eid Kabir, including sacrifice, obedience, and unwavering faith in God, emphasizing that these values are essential to fostering peace and progress in society.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event drew government officials, community leaders, youth and women groups, and members of the Muslim community.
The guest speaker, Dr. Sa’eid Ahmad of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, emphasized the importance of upholding the spiritual lessons of Eid Kabir amid modern-day pressures.
“Today’s lecture focuses on the trials of life and how to maintain our faith in God regardless of challenges. We must come together to support one another and flee from sin,” he said.
In her welcome address, the Wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, commended the First Family for organizing the event, noting that it fostered love, unity, and reflection on the significance of the festival.
Also speaking at the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Layode, encouraged Muslims to continue living in accordance with Islamic principles.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters, Mr. Abdullah Jebe, and the Grand Imam of Lagos State, Shaykh Suliamon Abu-Nolla.
