The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at a clinic in London, United Kingdom.

The announcement was made on Monday by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, via a statement released through the ministry’s permanent secretary, Magdalene Ajani.

The public holiday is in addition to the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Tinubu.

Tunji-Ojo said the gesture is a mark of respect for Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democracy, peace, and national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” the minister stated.

He urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s life and legacy and to promote the values he stood for — peace, patriotism, and national unity.

“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” he added.
