FG provides contacts to report DisCos who request customers to pay for obsolete meters

The Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), an agency of the federal government has told consumers not to replace electricity meters.

NERC also said the replacement must be at no cost to the consumer except if it is determined that it is the customer that damaged it.

This has come about following statements credited to electricity distribution companies led by Ikeja Electric in Lagos that it will disconnect customers who fail to purchase replacements for their obsolete Unistar meters.

In a Monday statement, the agency insisted that it was the responsibility of DisCos to provide new meters to customers.

“If your electricity meter is deemed obsolete or faulty by your DisCo, THEY MUST REPLACE IT FOR FREE!,” the notice by NERC in Monday reads.

“The only exception is if the damage is caused by YOU!
