The Lagos State Government has unveiled enhanced safety protocols to prevent stage collapses and crowd-related incidents during the 2025 Detty December festivities, following lessons learned from last year’s near-tragic occurrences.
Speaking at the Lagos State 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held in Ikeja, the Director-General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Omojola, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable festive season for residents and visitors.
The briefing was part of a larger event by the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, aimed at presenting its annual performance report in commemoration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second year in his second term.
“We had an overwhelming influx of people from overseas last year—it was beyond our imagination,” Omojola noted. “The commission worked tirelessly, day and night, to ensure that people could return home, celebrate, and remain safe.”
Omojola confirmed that a stage collapse occurred during one of the high-profile events in December 2024. Fortunately, due to the rapid response of emergency personnel already on ground, serious injuries were avoided.
To prevent such incidents in the future, the state is rolling out a new initiative focused on preemptive safety. “We are introducing what we call tourism safety marshals,” Omojola announced. “These marshals, supported by a strategic safety plan developed by experts, will be deployed across major event venues to ensure stronger safety enforcement.”
He added that this proactive approach reflects the state’s commitment to public safety during the high-traffic festive season.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) explains that Detty December refers to the vibrant holiday season in Nigeria, spanning mid-December to early January. It is marked by large-scale social events, parties, and cultural celebrations, drawing thousands of Nigerians from abroad and significantly boosting tourism and local economic activity.
With these new measures in place, the Lagos State Government aims to ensure that the 2025 Detty December is not only memorable but also secure for all participants.
