In a major crackdown on transnational vehicle trafficking, an INTERPOL-led operation across 12 West African nations has uncovered approximately 150 stolen vehicles, most of which originated from Canada.
Dubbed Operation Safe Wheels, the two-week initiative targeted organized crime networks involved in cross-border vehicle smuggling.
Law enforcement agencies from countries including Ghana, Nigeria, and Senegal participated in coordinated raids, resulting in the seizure of more than 75 vehicles on the spot and the launch of 18 new investigations into international vehicle theft rings.
Authorities also recovered stolen vehicles originating from France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
Toyota, Peugeot, and Honda emerged as the most frequently recovered vehicle brands, reflecting broader trends in high-demand models for illicit resale in the region.
INTERPOL emphasized that vehicle trafficking is often tied to broader criminal enterprises, including drug smuggling, money laundering, and terrorism financing. The organization highlighted the success of the operation as a testament to the importance of international police cooperation.
