The Lagos State Government has disowned a widely circulated statement claiming amendments to the state’s tenancy law, which allegedly introduced stricter rent and eviction regulations.

The viral report, which surfaced on Friday via X (formerly Twitter), falsely claimed that new provisions now cap advance rent payments at three months for existing tenants and limit landlords’ power to terminate leases or increase rent. The report also stated that violators would face fines up to N100,000 or three months’ imprisonment.

Barakat Bakare, Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, refuted the claims on Saturday, stating the information did not originate from the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).

She confirmed that the 2015 Lagos Tenancy Law remains in force, though a new bill is currently under consideration by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

“The ministry of housing is engaging stakeholders in discussions to promote monthly rent payments and improve understanding of real estate processes,” Bakare said.

She emphasized that the public would be officially informed once a new tenancy law is passed.

This development comes amid a worsening housing crisis in Lagos, marked by rising rents, inadequate housing supply, and aggressive landlord practices—challenges exacerbated by the state’s rapid population growth and urbanisation.

The Lagos State House of Assembly had previously called on the government to introduce policies curbing excessive rent hikes.
