The Federal Government has approved ₦12,000 as the new cost of kidney dialysis under the Kidney Dialysis Subsidy Scheme, a sharp drop from the previous ₦50,000.
Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director and Head of Information at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, announced this in Abuja on Wednesday.
Balogun explained that the move would save lives, ease the financial and physical burden of patients, and give vulnerable Nigerians better access to treatment.
He said the initiative supports Universal Health Coverage and ensures that no Nigerian is left behind.
The scheme began in 2024, and its pilot phase is already running in 11 federal tertiary hospitals across the country.
These include facilities in Kano, Maiduguri, Jos, Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Yenagoa, Owerri, and Abakaliki.
The government reduced the dialysis fee by 80 percent and has started implementation in these selected hospitals, with plans to expand the subsidy to more centers nationwide.
