The Lagos State Government has activated a round-the-clock traffic management and urban enforcement campaign across major roads and nightlife hotspots in preparation for the expected end-of-year travel surge.
Under the initiative tagged Operation Ember Months Stability, personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) are now stationed across strategic corridors including Ikorodu Road, Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Lekki-Epe axis and Agege Motor Road to reduce gridlock, deter road violations and promote commuter safety.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the continuous deployment ensures “seamless vehicular mobility” throughout the festive season.
Alongside traffic control, the state has also launched a sweeping urban regeneration enforcement drive led by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa. Multiple agencies — including KAI, LAMATA, Nigeria Police, LAWMA and the Public Works Corporation — carried out clearance operations at Apapa, Ijora, and Costain under-bridges.
The exercise resulted in the demolition of over 250 illegal shanties, evacuation of derelict vehicles and removal of makeshift encampments said to have obstructed movement and heightened security risks. Authorities also discovered a dummy firearm and other dangerous weapons hidden in one of the structures.
Commercial buses previously operating illegally in the cleared areas have been relocated to designated parks and terminals, while LAMATA has been directed to take over the reclaimed spaces and integrate them into the state’s transport infrastructure.
Bakare-Oki further cited recent emergency responses as proof of LASTMA’s readiness, including the deployment of recovery teams to a fatal multiple-truck crash on Kara Bridge that claimed six lives on September 29, 2025, and a prompt intervention at another articulated vehicle crash on Otedola Bridge the following day — actions that helped prevent additional casualties and prolonged traffic disruption.
