The Lagos State Government has commenced the payment of compensation to residents of Oworonshoki in the Kosofe Local Government Area, whose properties were affected by the ongoing urban renewal and regeneration exercise in the community.
The payment ceremony, held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the palace of the traditional ruler of Oworonshoki, brought relief and joy to several affected residents. The event was attended by the General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), TPL/ESV Olajide Animashaun, officials of the agency, community leaders, civil society representatives, security personnel, and members of the media.
Speaking at the ceremony before presenting cheques to the beneficiaries, TPL Animashaun described the exercise as the fulfillment of the Lagos State Government’s promise to support residents impacted by the regeneration project. He explained that the process followed extensive stakeholder engagements and proper enumeration of affected structures.
He noted that Oworonshoki was chosen for the regeneration exercise due to the prevalence of illegal, dilapidated, and unsafe buildings, many of which were constructed on canals and drainage channels, posing threats to lives and the environment.
Expressing gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his leadership, Animashaun commended the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, as well as the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, for their dedication to ensuring that the state’s promises were kept.
He said, “The Lagos State Government has demonstrated once again that it stands by its word. Today’s exercise is proof of its commitment to fairness, compassion, and responsible governance.”
Some beneficiaries who spoke to journalists expressed appreciation to the government, noting that the compensation would help them rebuild their lives after the demolition exercise.
A total of 79 residents were listed to receive compensation, with the first batch receiving their cheques on Thursday and the remaining beneficiaries scheduled to receive theirs the following day at the same venue.
