The Lagos State Government has announced that enforcement of the E-Call Up system for articulated vehicles on the Lekki-Epe corridor will officially begin on June 16, 2025. This move, previously postponed due to logistical challenges, aims to address persistent traffic congestion and improve vehicular movement in the area, particularly around the rapidly expanding Lekki Free Zone.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, during a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday, May 29, 2025. The meeting focused on traffic management concerns caused by rising industrial and port activities along the corridor.
Dr. Hamzat explained that the E-Call Up system has been strategically designed to regulate the movement of articulated vehicles and tankers, ensuring better traffic flow and preventing the chaotic gridlock that once plagued the Apapa axis.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration among all parties involved, stating, “This initiative is essential to strengthening logistics operations and improving transportation infrastructure, not just in Lekki but across Lagos.”
Supporting the Deputy Governor’s statement, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of the project. He acknowledged previous setbacks in enforcement but stated that renewed consultations had led to broader consensus among stakeholders.
“As part of the immediate measures, we have directed the removal of all articulated vehicles currently blocking the Lekki-Epe expressway,” Mr. Osiyemi said. He clarified that the E-Call Up system is not a revenue-driven initiative but a critical traffic management strategy.
The meeting brought together a wide array of key stakeholders, including representatives from the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Major Energies Marketer Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), Lekki Worldwide Investment Company (LWIC), Lekki Free Zone (LFZ), Lekki Deep Sea Port, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), NNPC Retail, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The enforcement of the E-Call Up system is expected to usher in a new era of traffic efficiency and safer road usage along one of Lagos State’s most economically strategic corridors.
