The Lagos State government has vowed to strictly enforce a “no truck” policy across the state following a devastating gas truck explosion that occurred under the Otedola Bridge on Tuesday night.¹ The explosion, which was attributed to poor truck maintenance, has led to a surge in accidents involving trucks on Lagos roads.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the truck had violated Lagos State law by ignoring a “no truck allowed” sign on the road. To prevent similar accidents, the Ministry of Transportation will enforce the policy by installing barriers and ensuring that trucks do not ply certain roads [1).

The state government is also working with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to inspect trucks and ensure they are roadworthy. Trucks that fail inspection will be confiscated.

Regarding the cracks on Otedola Bridge, Osiyemi noted that an integrity test will be conducted to confirm that the bridge is safe for motorists. The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure will collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Works to ensure the bridge’s structural integrity.
