As Government Officials Inspect Site, Reaffirm Commitment to Project Completion
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising former occupants in the allocation of shops at the newly redeveloped Alaba Transnational Market, currently undergoing significant transformation.
This assurance was given by the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, during a site inspection on Thursday. He reiterated that the objective of the market’s redevelopment is not displacement, but transformation—aligning with the Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy pillar of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ Agenda.
Dr. Babatunde emphasised that the government remains committed to delivering the project within the current administration’s tenure.
“As a matter of fact, in allocating shops at the Alaba Transnational Market, the Lagos State Government will give precedence to previous users, who will be required to obtain and complete the necessary forms from the Local Government,” he stated.
Chairman of Iba LCDA, Hon. Yisa Abiola Jubril, expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for undertaking the bold initiative to revamp the market, despite several challenges. He also echoed the government’s assurance that former shop owners would be given top consideration during allocation.
The inspection team also included members of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Hon. Sylvester Ogunkelu, Chairman of the Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, alongside his colleague Hon. Ege Olusegun, pledged legislative backing to ensure the timely delivery of the project. They called on traders to continue cooperating with the government for a smooth and hitch-free process.
Other key officials present at the inspection included:
- Dr. Awolaja, Director, Lagos State Valuation Office (LASVO)
- Tpl. Funke Adegun, Director of Urban Development
- Builder Florence Gbaye, Coordinating Director, Lagos State Building Control Agency
- ACP Adeleke Smith, Police Commander, Area K
- Chief Mushafau Alape, Oosa of Iba Land, who represented the Oniba of Iba
The government reiterated that the market renewal is part of a broader effort to enhance trading environments across Lagos, modernise public infrastructure, and improve economic activity in key commercial zones.
