The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Lagos State Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to power public institutions through rooftop solar solutions.

This partnership aims to accelerate clean energy deployment in the state and reduce reliance on diesel generators.

Key Highlights of the Partnership
– Rooftop Solar Solutions: The partnership will focus on providing reliable and renewable energy solutions to hospitals, schools, and other public facilities.
– Floating Solar Photovoltaic Plant: REA plans to launch Nigeria’s first floating solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, an 8-megawatt facility expected to power Lagos State University.
– Lithium Battery Assembly Plant: A $150 million lithium battery assembly plant will be established at the Lekki Free Trade Zone.
– Renewable Energy University: A new university will be set up to promote innovation and local capacity in the clean energy sector.

Addressing Nigeria’s Energy Challenges
Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, highlighted the country’s energy challenges, stating that only 2,000 megawatts of electricity were added to the national grid in the past 40 years due to long-standing neglect.

However, the current administration is committed to reversing this trend, with President Bola Tinubu prioritizing power sector reform.
