Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has announced that the government will begin full enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) starting July 1.

Single-use plastics refer to items designed for short-term use, often disposed of after one application. These include materials like Styrofoam, which is commonly used for single-use cups and containers but is also a brand of extruded polystyrene foam used for insulation.

In January 2024, the Lagos State Government prohibited the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other SUPs as part of efforts to curb environmental pollution. The decision drew mixed reactions, with some stakeholders and residents criticizing the short notice.

Providing an update on Monday via a post on X, Wahab emphasized that the government had been deliberate and strategic in implementing the policy. He stated that over the past 18 months, the state held multiple stakeholder engagement sessions with marketers and producers of SUPs.

“Now it’s time to act,” he wrote.

“We re-emphasized this stand during a courtesy visit by the management of TETRA PAK West Africa Limited, led by Managing Director Mr. Haithem Debbiche.

“This is about environmental responsibility, and we have given ample time to align with global best practices. What is unacceptable elsewhere cannot become standard in Lagos. We must protect our future and do what is right for the greater good.

“We’re not here to score points. We’re here to do the work. Just like with the successful enforcement of the styrofoam ban, we will insist on accountability and responsibility.”

The commissioner’s remarks underscore the government’s resolve to advance sustainable environmental practices and phase out harmful disposable products in the state.
