LAMATA introduces wooden covers to tackle manhole theft

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has launched an initiative to address manhole cover theft along Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) laybys in Lagos. LAMATA is replacing metal flood drain covers with treated wooden alternatives to curb theft and enhance commuter safety.

Rationale Behind the Shift
According to Engr. Kemi Ochei of LAMATA’s Public Transport Roads department, previous attempts to use metal gratings and fiber composite materials were unsuccessful due to their commercial value. The wooden covers, having no scrap value, are less appealing to thieves.

New Solution
LAMATA is confident that the wooden covers will be effective in both the short and long term. Ochei urged the public to protect the infrastructure, ensuring the sustainability of the solution.

Commitment to Safety
The initiative reflects LAMATA’s commitment to improving safety and preserving public infrastructure. The use of treated wood is a cost-effective and sustainable solution that eliminates the incentive for theft while offering adequate protection.
