No fewer than 12 officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have been summarily dismissed for violating professional ethics, while 19 others were demoted for misconduct between December 2023 and April 2025.
In addition, 17 personnel received stern warnings, and 12 were compelled to tender their resignations following internal investigations into infractions considered incompatible with the global operational standards to which the agency aspires.
This was disclosed by the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, during the official unveiling of the emblem commemorating the agency’s 25th anniversary—a symbol of its unwavering commitment to traffic regulation and orderliness across Lagos State.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Bakare-Oki expressed deep appreciation to the Lagos State Government and the motoring public for their continued support. He highlighted LASTMA’s significant strides over the years and reaffirmed its commitment to innovation, professionalism, and improving traffic flow across the metropolis.
He also spoke on a strategic institutional reform that has enforced stricter codes of conduct among officers. The recent disciplinary actions—ranging from dismissals to resignations—reflect the agency’s ethical overhaul aimed at ensuring accountability and professionalism.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the Lagos State Government, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, praised LASTMA’s invaluable contributions to the evolution of an efficient and responsive traffic management system in the state. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between public institutions and citizens to create safer roads and achieve seamless mobility in Nigeria’s most populous city.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, the anniversary emblem is not only a tribute to LASTMA’s past achievements but also a reaffirmation of its ongoing pledge to discipline, excellence, and public service.
Hon. Giwa noted that the silver jubilee marks a pivotal moment for reflection, renewed dedication, and future-oriented planning. “It is an opportunity to evaluate our journey, celebrate the men and women who uphold the LASTMA mandate with integrity, and outline a strategic vision for a technology-driven, citizen-centric traffic management system,” he said.
The theme for the 25th anniversary is: “LASTMA @ 25: Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads – Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovation.”
As part of the celebrations, the Lagos State Government will launch an ambitious 20-Year Traffic Management Plan (TMP) during a 3-Day Traffic Conference. The TMP will outline comprehensive strategies for managing vehicular and pedestrian traffic—before, during, and after infrastructure developments, as well as during high-impact events.
The silver jubilee celebrations will take place from July 15 to 17, 2025, featuring keynote presentations by both Nigerian and international experts, as well as award ceremonies honoring outstanding contributions by LASTMA personnel and key stakeholders in the traffic management ecosystem.
