The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has commenced a large-scale traffic clean-up operation across Lagos to restore order on the roads and enhance the city’s appearance.
On the first day of the exercise—covering areas such as Oyingbo, Oshodi, Adeniji Adele, Jibowu, and Iddo—LASTMA impounded 235 vehicles for various traffic violations. These included private cars, commercial buses (Danfo), tricycles, trucks, and inter-state buses.
The agency disclosed this in a statement posted on its official X handle on Thursday.
According to the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the vehicles were seized for offenses such as parking on walkways, obstructing traffic, creating illegal bus stops, and flouting traffic regulations.
“We will no longer tolerate any form of lawlessness on our roads. All impounded vehicles will be taken to court, and offenders will face the law,” Bakare-Oki said. “This operation is not targeted at anyone. It is simply about bringing back sanity to our roads. Everyone must learn to obey the rules.”
He further revealed that five trucks were apprehended for offloading cows and animal waste on the Adeniji Adele Bridge, posing serious risks to the structural integrity of the bridge and public safety. The drivers were arrested and will be prosecuted.
Additionally, ten miscreants involved in disrupting traffic and engaging in illegal activities were arrested during the operation.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that the clean-up exercise would be sustained and extended to all parts of Lagos, including Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe.
“LASTMA now operates under a zero-tolerance policy for traffic offences. Any vehicle parked illegally or caught driving against traffic will be dealt with immediately,” he stated.
