Man arraigned for stealing ₦1.7m worth of foodstuffs in Lagos

A 25-year-old man, Ismaila Lawal, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing foodstuffs valued at N1.7 million.

Lawal is facing a two-count charge bordering on stealing and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Inspector Esther Adesulu, informed the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences in February at the PPL Bus Stop in Ojo.

According to Adesulu, Lawal unlawfully took foodstuffs belonging to the complainant, Mr. Babangida Hazmat. The stolen items reportedly include rice worth N700,000, beans valued at N500,000, and corn worth N500,000.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant was arrested following a police investigation into the matter.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 168(d) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Magistrate Funke Ogun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties in like sum. She adjourned the case until July 25 for mention.
