The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Amos Daniel, popularly known as “Gambit,” over the alleged ritual killing of a young woman believed to be his girlfriend at a hotel in the Ayobo-Ipaja area of Lagos.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Daniel reportedly checked into the hotel around 5 p.m. with two male friends. A woman later joined them in the room. By 10 p.m., unsettling noises from the room drew the attention of nearby guests and hotel staff.
A guest, identified simply as Adio, revealed that after repeated knocks went unanswered, he and a security guard used a spare key to open the room. They found the woman lifeless, lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. The suspects had fled.
One of them, however—Daniel—was caught while attempting to escape through the hotel gate. Witnesses say he confessed during a confrontation that he and his accomplices murdered the woman for ritual purposes. He was beaten by a mob before police intervened.
The victim was identified as Endurance, from Akwa Ibom State.
Confirming the incident, Lagos police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the hotel manager reported the crime at Ayobo Police Station the following day. He disclosed that Daniel had checked in without providing a valid home address and that the body was discovered with multiple wounds from a sharp object.
A dagger believed to have been used in the killing was recovered from Daniel during his arrest. A police search of his premises also uncovered a UTC axe, cutlass, machete, jack knives, a laptop, a pair of service jungle boots, a local sponge, and large scissors.
The victim’s body has been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba for autopsy. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation.
