Electricity workers on Thursday called off their nationwide strike after about 10 hours, preventing what could have been a crippling blackout across the country. The decision followed an emergency intervention by the Federal Government in the labour dispute involving the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The truce was reached at a high-level meeting in Abuja, convened by the Minister of Power—represented by senior ministry officials—and attended by representatives of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, TCN management, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC).

The strike, triggered by unresolved welfare and operational issues, had sparked widespread fear of a nationwide power outage. However, after hours of deliberation, both sides reached key resolutions that paved the way for the suspension of the industrial action.

According to a communiqué issued at the end of the talks, the unions accepted the Minister’s appeal to review the report of a standing committee by October 6–7, 2025, with implementation scheduled to begin later in the month. TCN and NISO are expected to jointly assess the financial implications and submit an implementation plan for review.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was also directed to fast-track its tariff review to aid implementation. Importantly, the communiqué assured that no employee would be victimised for participating in the strike.

Labour leaders described the outcome as a “measured victory” but warned that they would not hesitate to resume industrial action if the government or TCN reneged on the agreement.

The development eased growing anxiety across homes and businesses nationwide, which had feared prolonged disruptions to electricity supply.
