The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a new directive mandating that all mobile phones and electronic devices be completely switched off during take-off and landing, effectively suspending the use of airplane mode in those critical phases of flight.
Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, announced the policy on Tuesday via his official X handle, noting that the unified regulation overrides previous allowances for devices to remain in airplane mode.
“Henceforth, the regulation per phones and other electronic devices in Nigeria has been unified: ALL PHONES MUST BE SWITCHED OFF DURING THE CRITICAL ASPECTS OF TAKE-OFF AND LANDING,” Achimugu wrote, directing airlines to amend their security programmes accordingly.
He added that the restriction would remain in place until further regulatory reviews are completed in line with evolving technological standards.
Passenger, Ibom Air Crew Summoned
Meanwhile, NCAA has invited a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, along with members of Ibom Air’s cabin crew, for questioning over an incident on a Uyo–Lagos flight on August 10.
The matter, which sparked outrage on social media, resurfaced after Emmanson used the restroom following touchdown in Lagos and was the last to disembark. Although the pilot-in-command did not initially call security operatives, NCAA is now investigating the case.
“I spoke with Emmanson this morning. We are also inviting the Ibom Air cabin crew for continued investigation on the incident. They will be here tomorrow,” Achimugu confirmed.
Senate Backs Stricter Enforcement
At a related briefing, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Buhari Abdulfatai, expressed concern over the increasing cases of unruly passenger behaviour and lapses among aviation workers. He called on stakeholders to support NCAA’s enforcement drive to strengthen discipline and safety in the industry.
