The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert forecasting thunderstorms in Lagos and several southern states from Monday to Wednesday, while northern regions are expected to experience dusty and hazy conditions.
In its three-day weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said Lagos may witness light morning rainfall and late morning thunderstorms on Monday, with moderate rainfall possible later in the day alongside other parts of the Southwest and Southeast.
Isolated thunderstorms are also anticipated over parts of Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos, while cloudy skies will dominate much of the southern region.
Across the North, slight dust haze is expected over Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, and parts of Kaduna, with sunny weather in other areas. Central states such as Benue and Kogi may experience isolated thunderstorms by evening.
For Tuesday, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions over Lagos in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely to develop later in the afternoon and evening. Similar weather patterns are expected in Ogun, Edo, Ondo, Enugu, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Delta States.
Northern communities will continue to see sunny and hazy conditions, while central states remain mostly sunny with possibilities of thunderstorms later in parts of Kogi, Benue, and Kwara.
On Wednesday, Lagos and other coastal and inland southern states are expected to experience moderate thunderstorms later in the day, following a cloudy start. Meanwhile, the North will maintain sunny conditions, with light rain and isolated thunderstorms likely over Kwara, Benue, and Kogi States in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet warned that suspended dust particles in northern states could impair visibility and air quality, urging motorists and road users to drive cautiously in both hazy and rainy conditions.
Individuals with respiratory issues were advised to limit outdoor exposure during dusty periods, while airline operators were encouraged to obtain updated weather information to prevent delays and disruptions.
The agency urged Nigerians to stay updated through its website and social media platforms for daily weather information and necessary precautions.
