Adio...during the assault

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a top member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Shamsideen Adio, for allegedly beating a dispatch rider to death on Lagos Island.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday along Tapa Street, reportedly began after a minor accident in which the rider scratched Adio’s vehicle. Eyewitnesses said the altercation escalated quickly, with Adio allegedly attacking the victim and being joined by his colleagues.

A disturbing video of the assault went viral on Thursday, sparking outrage across social media. Locals described Adio as notorious for harassing road users in the area, including tricycle operators.

Police sources confirmed that the rider later died from injuries sustained in the brutal assault, and that Adio has since been taken into custody. Attempts to reach the Lagos State Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, for official comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Reacting to the development, Lagos State NURTW Chairman, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (Sego), condemned the act, describing it as “tragic and disappointing.” In a statement, he distanced the union from Adio’s actions, stressing that the NURTW does not condone violence or unlawful behaviour.

“While I once trusted his loyalty, I was deeply bitter and disappointed that he could engage in such acts. His actions are his own and do not represent the NURTW in any way,” Adekunle said.

He pledged the union’s cooperation with law enforcement and promised that Adio would also face internal disciplinary measures once the legal process is concluded. Adekunle extended condolences to the victim’s family and assured them of the union’s support.

He further urged social media users to avoid linking him personally to the incident, calling such claims “misleading and unfair.”

The Lagos NURTW boss reiterated his commitment to the welfare of members, the rule of law, and the safety of Lagos residents.
