The Ogun State Government has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils in kindergarten and nursery schools across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, disclosed this on Thursday while briefing journalists on preparations for the 2024/2025 academic session.

Arigbabu clarified that graduation ceremonies will henceforth only be permitted for pupils completing Primary Six, Junior Secondary School Three (JSS3), and Senior Secondary School Three (SS3), which represent genuine academic transition points.

He explained that the decision aims to discourage the growing culture of excess around graduation parties for pre-basic and non-transition classes, which have become elaborate social events that place unnecessary financial burdens on parents.

“Graduation should reflect true academic milestones. Extravagant ceremonies for nursery or kindergarten children do not align with the essence of education,” the commissioner said.

The move aligns Ogun with other states such as Imo, Edo, Ebonyi, and Benue, which have introduced similar restrictions to curb exploitative practices by some school proprietors.

In addition, Prof. Arigbabu directed that all schools must adhere to a six-year cycle before changing textbooks, stressing that frequent alterations to booklists are unnecessary and financially draining for families.

“Quality education does not depend on changing textbooks every session, but on effective teaching and the proper use of resources. Schools that impose needless changes will face sanctions,” he warned.

The commissioner assured parents, teachers, and administrators that the policy is designed in the best interest of pupils and families, urging stakeholders to embrace the reforms for the sustainability of the education sector.
