Tragedy struck in the Alagomeji area of Yaba, Lagos State, after a three-storey building collapsed on Friday evening, leaving one person dead and several others rescued.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in its Day 2 incident report on Saturday, confirmed that the body of a male victim was recovered from the rubble during ongoing search and rescue operations.
Earlier, four people had been rescued alive after the building caved in at about 7:46 p.m. The Lagos State Fire Service also reported that eight construction workers were rescued from the site.
NEMA, in an update on X, said:
“Search and rescue operation is still ongoing at the building collapse scene. NEMA, LASEMA, Fire Services, Police, FRSC, and NSCDC are on ground. The number of persons rescued remain four; they are in stable condition. No additional person has been rescued at the time of this report but there is speculation of two more persons under the rubbles.”
In a later update, the agency confirmed: “One body (male) has just been recovered from the rubble. Search and rescue operation is still ongoing.”
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of buildings under construction in Lagos, where recurring collapses have claimed many lives despite repeated warnings and enforcement efforts by authorities.
