Opay launches ₦60m scholarship scheme for LASU students

Opay Digital Services Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lagos State University (LASU) to sponsor twenty students with a ₦60 million scholarship over the next ten years.

The agreement, signed on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, was executed under the auspices of LASU-SDG in collaboration with the Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA).

The decade-long initiative reflects Opay’s commitment to education, innovation, and youth development in Nigeria.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director of LASU-SDG, Professor Tayo Ajayi, commended the partnership, noting that it aligns with the university’s efforts to actualise the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through meaningful collaborations.

In her remarks, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, expressed deep appreciation to Opay for the gesture, describing the scholarship as a major boost for academic excellence and student welfare. She noted that the initiative would ease the financial burden on deserving students and exemplifies the private sector’s role in national development.

Chief Executive Officer of Opay Digital Services Limited, Elizabeth Wang, said the scholarship scheme is part of the company’s broader mission to promote inclusive education and youth empowerment. She reaffirmed Opay’s long-term commitment to education and revealed that, beyond the scholarship, the company plans to provide internship and employment opportunities for LASU students.

“This initiative is designed to ease financial challenges and inspire academic excellence. Our goal is to support the next generation with opportunities that prepare them for the future,” Wang stated.

She added that Opay, which currently employs over 5,000 staff, remains dedicated to corporate social responsibility, especially in the area of education.

Director of LASU’s Legal Affairs Division, Mrs. O. O. Boyejo, presented a summary of the MoU, highlighting the scholarship’s purpose, selection process, and mutual commitments between the university and Opay.

The MoU was formally signed by Professor Olatunji-Bello and Elizabeth Wang, alongside the University Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel A. Fanu. Witnesses included senior management staff such as the Deputy Vice-Chancellors for Academics and Administration, Professors Oseni Taiwo Afisi and Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, respectively; Director of LASUDA, Professor Rafiu Okuneye; and Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan.

The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from the Registrar, Mr. Fanu, marking the beginning of a partnership aimed at promoting academic excellence and sustainable youth empowerment.
