The family of a 27-year-old Lagos-based hairstylist, simply identified as Fatima, has raised alarm after she was brutally assaulted by her lover, resulting in the loss of six of her teeth.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, July 12, at the couple’s residence on Ibadan Street, in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State, following a heated argument that escalated into physical violence.

A family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the assault to our correspondent on Tuesday. He said Fatima was initially rushed to the hospital after a neighbour alerted them, but the extent of her injuries only became clear after a photo was shared showing severe damage to her mouth.

“A neighbour called and told us that Fatima was hospitalised. At first, we didn’t know it was due to domestic violence until the person we sent to check on her informed us that she had been beaten by her lover. We knew it was more serious when we saw pictures showing she had lost several teeth,” the source revealed.

According to the family member, the incident was reported to Denton Police Station and the suspect was arrested. However, the family was later informed that he had been released.

A resident of the area, identified simply as Adetunji, said Fatima, who hails from Kwara State, had allegedly been a repeated victim of abuse in the relationship.

“This isn’t the first time such abuse has occurred. We’ve intervened before, but she always returns to him. This latest incident was so severe that her parents got involved. Despite everything, she still begged the police to release him,” Adetunji said.

Another source familiar with the situation disclosed that Fatima is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. She has reportedly been fitted with a temporary dental device—commonly called a “teeth iron gag”—while awaiting reconstructive surgery scheduled for August 15.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had not responded to inquiries about the case.

The incident has sparked widespread concern in the community, with many calling for stricter enforcement of laws against domestic violence and greater protection for victims.
