The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State on Tuesday inaugurated a 13-member Screening Committee ahead of its forthcoming state executive elective congress.

The inauguration, which took place in Ikeja, was witnessed by party elders, stakeholders, and local government executives across the state.

Members of the committee include: Dr. Remi Akitoye (Chairman), Rev. Ahisu Dansu (Secretary), Mrs. Onikepo Oshodi, Sen. Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, Mrs. Aduke Maina, Dr. Niran Adeniji, and Elder John Agbaje. Others are: Aare Rasaq Fakunle, Alhaja Olorunkemi Babs, Alhaji Sikiru Yusuf, Alhaji Olatunji Hassan, Dr. Ogunbambi Lai, and Evangelist Olajumoke Akinola.

Addressing party leaders before the inauguration, Chief Bode George, former PDP Deputy National Chairman, stated that the exercise was a strategic move to prepare the ground for smooth conduct of the party’s congresses at ward, local government, and state levels.

According to him, the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) is committed to ensuring the congresses take place before the party’s national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State.

“I want to reaffirm that our past experiences have taught us to begin in-house. This is to reduce the acrimony and manipulation that often arise from external interference. What we are doing is akin to a mock examination — to ensure internal stability before the national body begins its process,” George explained.

He added that the party was being repositioned to focus on the people, with renewed civility, loyalty, and commitment at its core.

“This party must present a new face and show real commitment to the people of Nigeria. We want a party that is inclusive, fair, and people-first. We must demonstrate that we have the capacity and knowledge to make things better,” he said.

George urged public office holders to eschew greed and corruption, insisting that governance must be people-centered. He also called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate reforms for a new Nigerian constitution that promotes genuine federalism and national cohesion.

The PDP chieftain further charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to embrace seamless electronic transmission of results to strengthen the credibility of the electoral process.

Outlining the committee’s terms of reference, George said members would screen aspirants based on their membership status, curriculum vitae, positions sought, past contributions to the party, loyalty, commitment, and overall character.

Responding on behalf of the committee, Chairman Dr. Remi Akitoye pledged their full commitment to the assignment, assuring that the panel would ensure credible and capable leaders emerge from the process.

“We are committed to laying a new foundation for the PDP — not just in Lagos, but as a model for the nation. If we get it right here, others will follow. With God on our side, we shall deliver,” Akitoye said.
