Prof. Chris Piwuna, newly elected ASUU President, steps into office amid mounting pressure over academic welfare and federal funding controversies

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new national president. Piwuna, who also serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, succeeds Prof. Victor Osodeke, a Soil Science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

His election was confirmed at the Union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held in Benin City on Sunday. Piwuna emerged victorious in a keenly contested race against Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

Piwuna assumes leadership at a critical time, with mounting concerns over a possible strike due to unresolved issues such as the distribution of recently released Earned Academic Allowances, ongoing brain drain in the sector, and longstanding challenges facing Nigeria’s public universities.
