Lagos State Police Command has arrested two key suspects in connection with the brutal murder of a young woman from Nasarawa State, whose body was set ablaze in the “Gangare” slum by the canal behind Mile 12 Market on May 24, 2025.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident, initially surrounded by rumors and misinformation, has been clarified through preliminary investigations. The victim was residing in the slum with her northern relatives, and contrary to circulating claims, she was not of Yoruba origin and had not committed any act of blasphemy before her murder.
Police investigations revealed that the killing was the result of a violent fallout from a failed romantic relationship. The victim’s estranged boyfriend, who is currently on the run, allegedly conspired with others—two of whom are now in custody—to forcefully compel her back into the relationship. When she resisted, the conspirators attacked and murdered her before setting her remains on fire.
The suspects are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lagos, where they are assisting police efforts to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in the crime.
The Lagos State Police Command assured the public that normalcy has been restored in the Mile 12 area, including the Gangare slum, and that there has been no ethnic tension or threat of reprisal attacks as a result of the incident. Residents have been urged to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and continue with their daily activities without fear.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and will continue to provide timely updates as the investigation progresses,” the statement concluded.
