The Lagos State government has said, residents should report where any landlord seeks to collect more than a year’s rent.
In a recent appearance on television, Barakat Bakare, Special Adviser on Housing to the Lagos State governor urged residents to report landlords or agents demanding more than one year’s rent.
The Lagos State government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is in the process of reviewing the state’s tenancy law to address ongoing concerns surrounding excessive caution fees that have emerged as a contentious issue between landlords and tenants.
Bakare emphasized that landlords are only permitted to collect a maximum of one month’s rent, with options for quarterly payments. She encouraged affected residents to lodge complaints either at Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA), LASRERA’s office or through their website, stating that efforts are underway to foster fair pricing and responsible development in collaboration with property associations and developers. The government is dedicated to easing housing challenges for Lagosians while ensuring accountability in property transactions.
