The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed off the Monterosa Construction site in Lekki following a fatal crane accident that claimed the life of a site worker.
The tragic incident involved a crane operator, Mr. Rotimi Adesina, who sustained severe injuries during crane operations and was rushed to Evercare Hospital, Lekki Phase 1. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Officials of the Safety Commission arrived promptly at the site to commence preliminary investigations. However, the site’s Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officer, who was said to be attending to the injured operator at the time, was unavailable for immediate questioning.
The Project Manager, Mr. Hein Coerzer, and the Company Secretary, Mr. Ndidi Uchechukwu, were engaged by the Commission and asked to provide documents relating to the crane and the ongoing project. They stated that all relevant documentation is held at the company’s Head Office.
The Commission has since issued a directive for the submission of all necessary documents related to crane operations and the overall safety compliance of the project.
To prevent further risk to workers, the Director-General of the Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, ordered the immediate sealing of the site and the issuance of an abatement notice. He emphasized that the safety of lives remains paramount and that any compromise of precautionary measures will not be tolerated.
Mojola extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to upholding workplace safety through strict enforcement of health and safety regulations. He added that more updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
