Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hailed the revival of the Lagos Fanti Carnival as a vibrant reconnection to Africa’s cultural roots.
The carnival, which dates back to the 19th century, was founded by formerly enslaved Africans who returned from Brazil and other parts of the Americas.
A Celebration of Heritage
The event transformed Lagos Island into a living canvas of heritage, featuring Afro-Brazilian food, heritage art exhibitions, and a grand parade. Attendees donned vibrant Kampala fabrics, showcasing the city’s rich cultural identity.
Sanwo-Olu’s Statement
The Governor praised the carnival as a revival of Lagos’ “spirit of unity and resilience,” stating that it signifies the return of “the spirit of unity, resilience, and joy.”
