A dispatch rider was crushed to death by a moving train on Thursday after attempting to beat the signal at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja, Lagos.
According to the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the fatal accident occurred when the rider, identified only by his motorcycle registration number AGL 179 QR, tried to hurriedly cross the track despite an oncoming train.
Preliminary investig

ations revealed that the rider, who was reportedly speeding, ignored safety barriers and warnings in a bid to access the GRA axis of Ikeja. He was instantly killed upon impact as the train continued its movement along the track.
LASTMA officials, who were the first responders at the scene, immediately cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and maintain the free flow of traffic. They were later joined by officers from the Shogunle Police Division, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the victim’s remains.
Bakare-Oki described the incident as a tragic reminder of the consequences of impatience and reckless disregard for traffic regulations, especially around railway crossings.
He extended condolences to the victim’s family and urged dispatch riders and motorists to exercise patience, obey warning signals, and prioritise safety at all times.
The LASTMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustained public education, proactive enforcement, and continuous advocacy to promote discipline and orderliness on Lagos roads.
