The New York State Catholic Conference has strongly condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump for sharing an AI-generated image that depicts him dressed as the Pope. The organization, which advocates on behalf of the state’s Catholic bishops regarding legal and social justice issues, expressed deep concern over the post.

In a statement released on Saturday via X, the Catholic Conference stated: “There is nothing clever or funny about this image, Mr. President. We just buried our beloved Pope Francis, and the cardinals are about to enter a solemn conclave to elect a new successor of St. Peter. Do not mock us.”

The controversial image, initially posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform and subsequently shared by the White House’s official X account, features him in elaborate papal attire—complete with flowing white robes, a golden crucifix, and a mitre—raising one finger towards the sky. This digitally altered photo has ignited a wave of mixed reactions, ranging from amusement to disbelief and heated debate across social media.

The post followed closely on the heels of Trump’s comments to reporters, where he jokingly remarked, “I’d like to be pope; that would be my number one choice,” when asked about whom he would support as the next pontiff. His remarks came just before the convening of the papal conclave to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. Trump also attended Pope Francis’ funeral last week, marking his first international appearance since resuming public office.
