President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for swiftly approving the state of emergency proclamation in Rivers State.
This move was made in response to the prolonged political crisis that has crippled governance in the state and threatened national economic security for over 15 months.
In a statement on Thursday signed by Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesperson, Tinubu praised the National Assembly’s leadership, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, for prioritizing the security and welfare of Rivers State people above partisan interests.
He also appreciated the lawmakers’ diligent review of classified security briefings, which highlighted the urgent need for intervention to prevent further escalation.
The President reaffirmed that the six-month emergency rule will enable the newly appointed Sole Administrator to stabilize Rivers State, address systemic breakdowns, and facilitate dialogue among conflicting parties.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with the National Assembly to advance peace, economic resilience, and equitable development across Nigeria.
Tinubu had earlier declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the lingering political crisis, which he said had affected democracy, security, and the well-being of citizens.
