President Bola Tinubu, observing from his Lagos residence, closely followed a major political development on Friday as Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The high-profile defection ceremony took place at the Akwa Ibom State Government House in Uyo and was attended by several APC dignitaries, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Edo State’s Senator Monday Okpebholo. Also present was Mrs. Ekaete Unoma Akpabio, wife of the Senate President.
In a video shared on APC Nigeria’s official X platform, President Tinubu, GCFR, was seen observing the development with keen interest.
Governor Eno declared, “After completing the rounds of my consultation as your servant whom you have elected to serve, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC.”
The defection is expected to trigger a significant political realignment in Akwa Ibom, with all 31 local government chairmen, numerous lawmakers, and a majority of cabinet members reportedly preparing to follow the governor to the ruling party.
However, the political shift has not been without dissent. Dr. Ini Ememobong, Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, tendered his resignation, citing a refusal to compromise his personal principles and political beliefs.
Governor Eno’s move marks a major gain for the APC and a potential turning point in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
