A tragic incident occurred in Awka, Anambra State, on Sunday, as a police officer was accidentally shot dead by his 10-year-old son during a visit at his duty post.

The officer, identified as Inspector Okolie Amechi, was on night duty at Polaris Bank along Zik Avenue by Okeke Street in Awka when his three sons paid him a visit. In a devastating twist, his eldest son, Dominion Vincent, aged 10, reportedly picked up his father’s service rifle and, unaware it was loaded, accidentally discharged the weapon.

The bullet struck Inspector Amechi in the spine from behind, killing him instantly. It also hit his youngest son, Emmanuel Vincent, aged 6, who sustained gunshot wounds to the back and right hand.

Both victims were rushed to the Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital, Awka. While young Emmanuel is said to be responding to treatment, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead on arrival.

According to the preliminary police report, the officer’s AK-47 rifle (Breach No. BA360691), loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition, had been cocked and left with the safety off — a violation of basic firearm safety protocols. The weapon has since been recovered, and the case has been referred to the Central Police Station (CPS), Awka, for a full investigation.

The incident has sparked renewed concern over safe firearm handling, especially around civilians and children.
