The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 60-year-old motorcycle operator, Wasiu Babatunde Adeniran, who was swept away by floodwaters during a torrential downpour along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Alakuko.

In a statement issued Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command revealed that the tragic incident occurred on May 20, 2025, at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Adeniran reportedly lost control of his motorcycle amid the heavy rainfall and was dragged into the floodwaters. Both he and his motorcycle were swept away by the powerful current.

Emergency search efforts began immediately, with the motorcycle recovered around 6:00 p.m. the same day. However, Adeniran’s body was not found until the following morning, May 21, at about 9:00 a.m., at the Obasanjo River in Ota, Ogun State.

Police detectives visited the incident and recovery sites, documenting the scene with photographs. The deceased’s body has been deposited at a public morgue for autopsy.

“The command extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” the statement concluded, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing.
