A devastating accident occurred on Sunday along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, inward Maryland, Lagos State, resulting in the death of a pedestrian with hearing impairment.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that one of the minibuses involved lost control while speeding, rammed into a stationary vehicle, and then struck the pedestrian, who was waiting at a designated bus stop near Temac Filling Station.

According to LASEMA spokesperson Taofiq Adebayo, officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Area F Police Division responded promptly to the accident.

The two Suzuki mini commercial buses involved in the fatal collision have been taken into custody for further investigation.

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, has warned commercial drivers against reckless driving and emphasized the importance of proper vehicle maintenance, particularly braking systems. Giwa also highlighted the role of Lagos’ Intelligence Transport System in monitoring speed violations at key locations.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for collective responsibility in preventing accidents.

As Giwa stated, “Ensuring road safety is a collective responsibility. Indiscriminate speeding and flagrant disregard for traffic laws constitute an existential threat to public safety.”
