US President Donald Trump signed a new executive order on Wednesday night imposing a travel ban that will bar or restrict entry into the United States for citizens from 19 countries, citing national security concerns. Nigeria was not included in the list.
Who is Banned?
Starting 9 June, citizens from 12 countries — Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen — will be completely barred from entering the US.
An additional seven countries — Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela — will face partial entry restrictions.
Are There Exemptions?
Yes. Certain individuals will be exempt, including athletes attending major international sporting events, some dual nationals, and Afghan citizens with Special Immigrant Visas. The Secretary of State may also grant entry on a case-by-case basis.
President Trump’s Statement:
“The US cannot have open migration from any country where we cannot safely and reliably vet and screen those who seek to enter,” Trump said in a video message announcing the order.
