Umahi reopens Independence bridge after days of gridlock

David Umahi, Minister of Works, has announced the reopening of the Independence Bridge in Lagos, which was closed for essential maintenance and rehabilitation work.

The closure resulted in severe gridlock, stranding commuters and motorists in the Victoria Island area.

Umahi ordered the immediate reopening of the bridge on Thursday, following public outcry over the closure. Contractors worked overnight to ensure the bridge was ready for use.

Permanent work on the bridge will commence in three weeks.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had apologized for the gridlock, advising residents to conduct business online to avoid traffic congestion.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the repair was necessary, as the bridge had begun to fail.
