The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has dismissed claims of a tuition increase for undergraduate students, explaining that recent changes in the charges displayed on students’ portals are part of a restructuring process aligned with the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) directive.

On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, some students staged a protest over what appeared to be sharp increases in certain fees. Department and faculty dues reportedly rose from ₦2,000 in the 2024/2025 academic session to ₦15,000, while the Tertiary Institutions Students Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) charge moved from ₦5,000 to ₦7,500.

Other newly listed items include entrepreneurship training (₦5,000), portal maintenance (₦15,000), student insurance policy (₦1,250), student support services (₦1,250), professional services (₦7,500), and general studies (GST) fees at ₦5,000.

However, UNILAG spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, clarified in a statement on Wednesday that the figures reflect a consolidation of existing payments rather than an upward review.

She explained that the adjustments comply with NELFUND’s directive for universities to centralize all student payments on their official portals, a move designed to streamline the student loan application process.

“This ensures that once students make payments through the official university portal, no additional fees will be collected at the faculty or departmental levels,” Alaga-Ibraheem said.

She added that the restructuring aims to make the system more transparent and beneficial for students applying for educational loans, ensuring that all legitimate school-related charges are covered within a single, centralized payment structure.

Alaga-Ibraheem also noted that any differences in the amounts displayed on student portals are due to programme-specific requirements and should not be interpreted as a fee increase.
