The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has firmly debunked a viral social media report alleging the cancellation of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates.
The false press statement, dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education and WAEC had jointly nullified the entire examination due to alleged widespread malpractice, question paper leaks, and unauthorized digital dissemination of exam materials.
In an official reaction issued on Sunday, July 20, WAEC described the report as “spurious” and stated categorically that the examination had not been canceled. The Council noted that it had concluded the marking of examination scripts and assured candidates that results would be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
“The Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers bent on discrediting the Council and causing panic among candidates,” the statement read.
WAEC urged the public and stakeholders to disregard the false information, reiterating that all official communications are released only through its verified social media platforms and accredited media outlets.
All official press releases, the Council emphasized, are issued and signed by its Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
The statement was signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria.
