Youth Creativity Shines as Lagos Champions Climate Action Through Innovation and Art
Winners have emerged in the Lagos Has Talent: Climate Edition, a pioneering initiative of the Lagos State Government in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and C40 Cities, under the UK government-funded Climate Action Implementation (CAI) Africa Programme.
The competition provided a vibrant platform for young creatives and entrepreneurs to showcase climate-themed innovations and artistic expressions—spotlighting the ingenuity and environmental consciousness of Lagos youth.
Grand Finale Celebrates Innovation and Action
The grand finale, held on Saturday, July 26 at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, brought together an energetic blend of youth innovators, creatives, government officials, development partners, and climate advocates. Themed Youth, Creativity, and Climate Action, the event recognized outstanding talents aged 18–35 across categories including storytelling, poetry, film and animation, music, sustainable fashion, and eco-entrepreneurship.
From over 100 entries across the state, five finalists emerged after a rigorous evaluation process conducted by a panel of expert judges who assessed creativity, passion, and the ability to inspire climate action in Lagos.
Winners and Prizes
Progress Jesutomiwa Giwa, a visual artist and storyteller, claimed the grand prize of ₦5 million.
Ayomide Amusan, a visual storyteller, received ₦3 million as first runner-up.
Anita Nwokoji, a spoken-word poet, earned ₦2 million as second runner-up.
Tiwalade Aderemi and Adebayo Razzak, who placed fourth and fifth respectively, received ₦500,000 each—a prize that was later doubled through a surprise announcement.

The judging panel included:
- Oluwaseyi Jesuton – Award-winning climate advocate and co-founder, U-Recycle Initiative Africa
- Jumoke Olowookere – Founder, African Creative Sustainable Synergy Hub
- Omowunmi Omoseyindemi – Senior Scientific Officer, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources

- Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akudo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment
- Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of the Environment
- Engr. Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services
- Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, MD/CEO, LAWMA
- Dr. Tunde Ajayi, GM, LASEPA

A Launchpad for Long-Term Impact
Speaking at the event, Director of Climate Change and Environmental Planning, Mr. Michael Bankole, commended the finalists and announced a post-competition mentorship programme for all five winners.
“This event is more than a competition,” said Engr. Rotimi-Akudo. “It is a platform to amplify youth voices, elevate innovative climate solutions, and demonstrate Lagos State’s unwavering commitment to climate resilience and inclusive development.”
Following the finale, the finalists were hosted by Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, at his office. Each finalist presented their project and shared their personal journey. Moved by their passion, the Commissioner announced an additional ₦1 million each for the fourth and fifth-place winners.
In a bold step toward sustained engagement, he also revealed that all five finalists will be formally integrated into the Ministry’s Climate Advocacy Team as brand ambassadors—supporting government-led initiatives around renewable energy, wastewater management, and climate adaptation strategies.

“This initiative is not just about winning prizes,” said Commissioner Wahab. “It is about building a movement that goes beyond the stage—empowering youth to lead climate action in their communities and shaping a greener future for Lagos.”
Lagos Has Talent: Climate Edition has set a new standard for youth-led climate innovation, civic participation, and sustainable engagement. With ongoing support and visibility, it promises to inspire a new generation of climate champions across Nigeria and beyond.
