No fewer than 11 persons lost their lives in a tragic lone accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway after a vehicle reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the Eruku Bridge in Ogun State.
The fatal crash occurred on Sunday night and involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE 722 KJ.
According to the Ogun State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oludare Ogunjobi, the vehicle lost control, somersaulted and fell off the bridge, trapping all occupants inside as the doors allegedly jammed on impact.
Emergency responders from the FRSC Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene alongside members of the local community to carry out rescue operations.
Sadly, all 11 occupants of the vehicle — made up of 10 adult males and one adult female — were confirmed dead at the scene.
FRSC officials and local residents reportedly had to dismantle parts of the vehicle before the bodies of the victims could be recovered.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.
The FRSC attributed the accident to suspected driving under the influence and overloading, warning motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to exercise caution, especially during night journeys.
The sector commander also commiserated with the families of the victims over the tragic incident.
