The X account of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has renewed calls for his release or a fair trial, highlighting that he has spent 256 days in detention.

A post published on the former governor’s account on Friday described a fair trial as a fundamental human right rather than a privilege or an act of compassion.

The appeal was accompanied by tags directed at several prominent international figures and institutions, including United States President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron, the United Nations, African Union and European Parliament.

International media organisations such as CNN, BBC, The Economist and The Washington Post were also tagged in the post.

El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 19, following his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former governor is facing multiple allegations, including money laundering and conversion of public property.

He is also standing trial in a separate case instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS), involving a five-count amended charge over the alleged unlawful interception of telephone conversations linked to National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The latest appeal comes amid ongoing legal proceedings in the DSS case.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had recently dismissed El-Rufai’s no-case submission, allowing the trial to proceed.

The former governor’s detention and the charges against him have continued to attract public attention, with Friday’s social media appeal seeking to draw international attention to his demand for a fair hearing.
