Traffic was heavily disrupted on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday afternoon after a high-capacity Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) commercial bus caught fire.
The incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m. near the Adekunle area of the bridge on the lane inbound toward Iyana Oworo, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
In a statement and posts on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, LASTMA confirmed that the bus fire affected vehicular movement on the bridge, one of the busiest transport routes in Africa. Officers were immediately deployed to the scene to manage traffic, while personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish the blaze.
As of the time of reporting, there were no confirmed injuries or casualties. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The Third Mainland Bridge, which stretches approximately 11.8 kilometres and links Lagos Island with the mainland, carries heavy daily traffic and is frequently impacted by accidents and emergencies, often leading to significant congestion.
