The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan ahead of scheduled maintenance works on the expansion joints and bridge elements of Mazamaza Bridge along the Lagos–Badagry Expressway.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the plan in a statement on Friday, noting that the rehabilitation will affect both the service and toll lanes, inbound and outbound. The works are scheduled to run for 18 weeks, from Monday, January 19 to Thursday, May 28.
Osiyemi assured motorists that the bridge would not be completely closed at any point during the maintenance. Instead, traffic will be managed through phased diversions across the toll lane, BRT corridor and service lane to minimise disruption.
According to him, a preliminary phase will take place from Saturday, January 24 to Friday, January 30. Phases one to four, covering the Badagry-bound lanes on both the service and toll lanes, will run from Saturday, January 31 to Monday, March 30. Phases five to eight, focusing on the Lagos-bound lanes, are scheduled from Tuesday, March 31 to Tuesday, June 2.
During phases one and two, Badagry-bound traffic will be diverted to the BRT corridor while repairs are carried out on the toll lane. Motorists will rejoin the toll lane about 50 metres after the work zone. When work shifts to the BRT corridor, traffic will temporarily use the toll lane before returning to the BRT route beyond the construction area.
For phases three and four, repairs on the Badagry-bound service lane will require traffic to merge into one of the two available lanes near the work zone, with full access restored after the bridge.
Osiyemi said repairs would then move to the Lagos-bound side of the bridge. During phases five and six, Lagos-bound traffic will be diverted to the BRT corridor while work is carried out on the toll lane, with motorists rejoining their original route after the construction area.
In phases seven and eight, repairs on the Lagos-bound service lane will reduce traffic to a single lane near the work zone, after which full access will be restored.
The commissioner urged motorists to obey traffic signs and follow the directives of officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and other relevant agencies to ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the rehabilitation period.
