Animashaun warns against poor sanitation and roadside trading, citing public health and safety concerns

The Chairman of Epe Local Government Area (LGA) of Lagos State, Ms Surah Animashaun, has urged traders at the Aiyetoro and Oluwo fish markets to consistently maintain a clean and hygienic trading environment.

Animashaun made the call on Saturday during an inspection visit to some market areas in Epe, where she emphasised the importance of cleanliness and proper environmental sanitation.

According to her, clean markets are critical to safeguarding public health, noting that poor sanitation could lead to the outbreak of communicable diseases, particularly in fish markets where waste management requires extra caution.

The council chairman advised traders to dispose of refuse appropriately, avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste, and ensure regular cleaning of their stalls and surrounding areas.

She stressed that environmental hygiene is a collective responsibility and urged all stakeholders to play their part in sustaining a healthy market environment.

Animashaun also warned that the local government would not hesitate to enforce existing environmental sanitation laws, including the imposition of sanctions on defaulters.

She assured traders of the council’s commitment to providing adequate waste disposal facilities and conducting regular monitoring to ensure a clean and safe market environment.

In addition, the council boss cautioned traders against roadside trading, especially around the Aiyetoro market axis, noting that several road accidents had occurred in the area due to such practices.

“We therefore urge traders to stop selling by the roadside to avoid preventable accidents,” she said.
